Last weekend we went with friends to Abu Dhabi Art--a sale of mostly modern art on Saadiyat Island. They had a wide range of works from a sculpture made of an old ship's propeller painted orange to requisite Arabic calligraphy art to a 3-D sculpture of NYC out of marble to some Andy Warhol stuff to a Degas dancer to a bedazzled oil barrel that appeared to be bleeding from the bottom to a cool work for your wall that responded to any movement nearby by darkening tiny screens. Still, we managed not to purchase.
What we were most impressed by was the Emirati Expressions photography exhibit in the Manarat Al Saadiyat. There were some bleakly honest photos of Abu Dhabi along with more art-like, composed works and creative presentations. I especially like the self-portraits of a young woman photographer set against repeating backgrounds of things like books that appeared as if she was flying.
We rode back to town as the sun was setting, a giant orange globe sinking over the water. We decided a drink was in order and found a seat along the canal at Prego where we could sip some chilled white wine and nibble on some cheese and while away the evening.
